Pakistan Army Mi-17 helicopter crashes in PoK, all 21 onboard killed
Leader of the Opposition Ritabrata Banerjee on Wednesday claimed that the Trinamool Congress rebel faction has expanded its strength in the West Bengal Assembly from 58 to 64 MLAs and asserted that the number could increase further in the coming days. Speaking outside the Assembly, he rejected speculation about a possible merger with Congress and stated that his group considers itself the legitimate Trinamool Congress. His remarks came amid ongoing political discussions involving Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee and senior Congress leaders in New Delhi.
Addressing questions about reports of a possible understanding between sections of the Trinamool Congress and Congress, Ritabrata said his faction has no intention of joining any other political party. He stated that the rebel camp remains committed to functioning as the Trinamool Congress and maintained that the group's legislative strength continues to grow. He also said that the faction plans to submit a separate communication to the Speaker regarding its position.
The political developments come at a time when divisions within the party have reportedly spread beyond the Assembly to Parliament. A group of 20 Trinamool Congress MPs led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has reportedly communicated its intention to align with the NDA camp. In the Rajya Sabha, Sukhendu Sekhar Ray and Sushmita Dev have reportedly resigned, adding to the pressure on the party leadership.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee have held meetings with senior Congress leaders in New Delhi, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. These interactions have fueled speculation about future political arrangements between the two parties. Reports of possible roles being offered to senior Trinamool leaders within Congress have further intensified discussions regarding the party's future direction.
Ritabrata also referred to reports suggesting that additional MPs could join the rebel camp. Speculation has emerged around the positions of Mala Roy and Sayani Ghosh, both of whom were recently included in newly constituted party committees. Responding to questions about future developments, Ritabrata reiterated that his faction currently claims the support of 64 MLAs and maintained that the number could continue to rise.
